Who here is plagued by migraines? I, unfortunately, am one of them and gosh, do i know how bad it hurts! >.< Now, rambling aside, there has been a recent study done on another possible cause of migraines: Incomplete brain arterial structure.
Dr Brett Crucchiara, from the University of Pennsylvania, led this research and did MRIs on the brain arterial structures of people with migraines with and without auras (flashes of light etc.) as well as people without migraines. In conclusion, the results suggested that an incomplete circle of Willis in the visual cortex (which was common in most migraine patients, both with and without auras) might be the cause of migraines and the visual complications that come with them.
Now, what might this mean to the future of migraine treatment? Well, it might lead to a more customized and improved method of treating migraines or even nipping it at the bud. After further studies, doctors could create medication according to the functions of the circle of Willis arteries and differ treatment for those with incomplete arterial structures and those without.
